Does Tollgate work offline?

Updated 28 Jul 2026

Yes. The gate is built to work on the subway, on a plane, and in that one corner of your apartment where the WiFi gives up.

How it stays offline ready

Tollgate downloads and caches questions for your topic before you ever need one, starting during onboarding and topping up whenever you open the app. The free topics, General knowledge and Math, additionally ship inside the app itself, so they have a reserve that cannot run dry. By the time a shield fires, the question behind it is already sitting on your phone.

The shield even says so: “question ready · works offline.”

Everything else about the loop is local too. The shield is drawn by iOS, your answer is checked on the device, and your stats are computed on your phone. No part of paying a toll requires a network.

The one rare failure, and how it resolves

If Tollgate ever reaches for a question and genuinely has none, say a Pro topic cache ran dry after weeks offline, it does not lock the gate. You get this instead:

That one’s on us. We couldn’t load a question, so your next block is free. Open Tollgate on a connection and we’ll restock.

The block unlocks free of charge. Tollgate’s rule for its own failures is simple: they always resolve in your favor. A bug in our question pipeline should cost us, never you.

If you want the cache topped up before a long stretch offline, just open Tollgate while you still have a connection. That is the whole ritual.
