The shield looks plain or lost its styling

Updated 28 Jul 2026

The Tollgate shield is normally unmistakable: dark, gold, with your topic named and a little encouragement about walking away. If the gate instead comes down as a plain gray iOS screen with generic buttons, you have hit a rare cosmetic failure.

What happened

The shield is drawn by a tiny extension that runs inside Apple’s Screen Time system, separate from the app itself. It reads Tollgate’s colors and copy from a shared storage container at the moment it draws. If iOS fails to give the extension access to that container, the extension falls back to the system’s default appearance rather than showing nothing.

The important part: the gate still works. The buttons behave normally, “Answer to unlock” still sends your unlock notification, the toll still pays, and your stats still count. Only the paint is missing.

The fix

  1. Restart your iPhone. If the container hiccup was transient, this clears it, and the next shield draws in full gold.
  2. Reinstall Tollgate if the plain shield keeps coming back. A reinstall rebuilds the shared container correctly, and in practice this cures it. Before you do, know what a reinstall costs: your stats reset, your subscription does not. Run through onboarding again (about a minute) and you are back.

Worth knowing

Tollgate notices these failures itself. The extension quietly records that it could not read its styling, and the app reports the failure the next time it opens, so recurring cases show up on our side as a signal to chase. If you hit this more than once even after a reinstall, email us with your iOS version. You would be helping us corner something genuinely rare.
